Global deep-sea burial rate of calcium carbonate during the last glacial maximum Nina

چکیده
Global databases of calcium carbonate concentrations and mass accumulation rates in Holocene and last glacial maximum sediments were used to estimate the deep-sea sedimentary calcium carbonate burial rate during these two time intervals. Sparse calcite mass accumulation rate data were extrapolated across regions of varying calcium carbonate concentration using a gridded map of calcium carbonate concentrations and the assumption that accumulation of noncarbonate material is uncorrelated with calcite concentration within some geographical region. Mean noncarbonate accumulation rates were estimated within each of nine regions, determined by the distribution and nature of the accumulation rate data. For core-top sediments the regions of reasonable data coverage ncompass 67% of the high-calcite (>75%) sediments globally, and within these regions we estimate an accumulation rate of 55.9 + 3.6x10 TM mol yr '•. The same regions cover 48% of glacial high-CaCO3 sediments (the smaller fraction is due to a shift of calcite deposition to the poorly sampled South Pacific) and total 44.1 + 6.0x10 • mol yr '•. Projecting both estimates to 100 % coverage yields accumulation estimates of 8.3x10 •-mol yr '• today and 9.2x10 •2 mol yr '• during lacial time. This is little better than a guess given the incomplete data coverage, but it suggests that glacial deep sea calcite burial rate was probably not considerably faster than today in spite of a presumed ecrease in shallow water burial during glacial time.

Global pulses of organic carbon burial in deep-sea sediments during glacial maxima.
The burial of organic carbon in marine sediments removes carbon dioxide from the ocean-atmosphere pool, provides energy to the deep biosphere, and on geological timescales drives the oxygenation of the atmosphere. Here we quantify natural variations in the burial of organic carbon in deep-sea sediments over the last glacial cycle. Using a new data compilation of hundreds of sediment cores, we s...
متن کاملCalcium carbonate cycling in future oceans and its influence on future climates
In the last few years, evidence has accumulated that calcifying organisms are likely to be affected by ocean acidification. Therefore, the production of calcium carbonate will probably decline, although conversely global warming, increasing stratification and sea level rise may also stimulate increases in global calcification. As acidification reaches the deep ocean, it will cause pronounced sh...

1 The global carbon cycle The global carbon cycle encompasses the sum of processes that determine the amount of carbon within, and fluxes between, different carbon reservoirs on Earth (Fig. 1). These processes are quantitatively important on a range of timescales and can induce both short-term fluctuations and changes in steady-state conditions1–3. On timescales of up to centuries and thousands...
متن کاملResponse of deep-sea CaCO3 sedimentation to Atlantic meridional overturning circulation shutdown
[1] Changes in the distribution of the preservation and burial of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in deep ocean sediments and associated atmospheric pCO2 response to the shutdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC) are examined using an Earth system model. We find that shutdown of the Atlantic MOC forced by the freshwater inflow significantly decreases the CaCO3 content in North ...

A greater amount of CO2 was stored in the deep sea during glacial periods, likely via greater efficiency of the biologic pump and increased uptake by a more alkaline ocean. Reconstructing past variations in seawater carbonate ion concentration (a major component of alkalinity) enables quantification of the relative roles of different oceanic CO2 storage mechanisms and also places constraints on...
